An Honor to Know Him

I had the honor and privilege to work with Scott in various capacities at the Portland VA before retiring. Those who have honored him in previous messages in such an eloquent manner make it nearly impossible to add any more. As was said of him at his funeral – he lived his life as a champion. I ran into Scott several months ago on a visit to the VA and even after 7 years of being gone – I was greeted with a generous smile and a big hug. When he was with you it was 100% and never hurried. The time with him meant everything no matter how limited. Our veterans were so very blessed that he chose the Portland VA to practice. He took such a special interest not only in their medical needs, but took time to know them as individuals each with a special history to honor. To these he gave 100% as well as to his colleagues who worked along side him. He always strived to make things better, even when they were pretty darn good! My favorite memory is meeting his family for the first time at a Christmas Party for VA staff. We talked music and when I told him I played the accordion he said “come up stairs”. There we played some music! Maureen, Kevin, Erin, Ellen and Brian, family and friends – how rich is your life for being able to spend it with Scott. He truly lived every minute to the fullest and not just for himself, but always for others. I know the love, support and many fond memories that have been shared over the last several days, will keep him with you forever in spirit. God truly blessed this earth with a messenger of faith, hope and love when he gave us Scott. God bless you always. Shirley Toth
