The Gift that keeps on giving

Scott and I were medical school classmates. For our third year psychiatry rotation we were assigned to the same psychiatrist, and spent two months on a locked ward at the Cleveland VA. We were trying to help patients with serious problems, yet I remember the time as also being full of laughter, silliness and joy, courtesy of Scott. I was surprised and thrilled to reconnect with Scott several years after medical school when I noticed something familiar about the way the person sitting in front of me at UCLA Grand Rounds set his cup down. More recently, last fall, while doing a final clear-out of my flooded house, I came across a message for me from the Cleveland Dating Service. They had found a potential match for me - someone recently discharged from the WPVA. It took a few minutes, but I finally got it. I laughed harder than I'd laughed in a long, long time - probably thirty years or so. All that feeling of innocent joy and lightheartedness returned. That is what I remember and cherish when I think of this good, kind, genuine man - his wonderful sense of humor, and the laughter and joy he gave. As others have said, he makes everyone feel like a friend. And that is a rare gift. Marina Wasylyshyn
