Back in the day with Scott . .

I was lucky to have Scott as a close teen-age pal. Two of our early connections were farming and old Saabs. When I was working at my uncle’s farm and he at the family farm we would often meet at a halfway point for lunch, in an orchard alongside a country road. If not an ol’ farm truck, Scott would show up in his 60s Saab model 96 two-stroker—he loved that car and knew its every quirky attribute inside and out. He’d emerge covered in dust, head to toe, from working grass seed. He could talk about farm machinery non-stop, the older the better. One of his favorite past times was driving to farm machinery auctions and private sales with an eye on vintage tractors and farm implements. He had a passion for understanding the mechanics of how things worked and he wasn’t a casual observer. He was quick to clamor over old tractors beaming while his hands explored every oily part and rusted knob. Scott taught me the joy of inquisitive discovery of things otherwise left alone. My 1973 Saab model 96 that can still get me around town is in honor of his passion for the obscure but innovative things in life.
