I am Scott’s Best Friend… Seven years ago Scott and Ellen invited Peter Trumbo and me along with our daughter’s Katherine and Amanda to go camping at Pamela Lake. I remember sitting around the camp fire telling stories and talking and the topic of favorite movie scenes came up. Among several Scott said, the scene in Spartacus where the Romans are searching for Spartacus and Tony Curtis stands up to proclaim,” I am Spartacus! “ And there is that dramatic pause and then another slave proclaims, “ I am Spartacus! And another repeats it and another, and it becomes a chorus and the men who loved and respected Spartacus rise up to protect him. Scott said he loved that scene for its strength and compassion and sense of loyalty. I got to know Scott better on that camping trip and others to follow and it is not cliché to say that I always felt in our conversations that I was important to him and he sincerely cared about me and that he treated me as his Best Friend. So tonight, let me join what will be hundreds of men across the universe proclaiming in a chorus what we sincerely feel and are honored to believe based upon our interactions with Scott …. I AM SCOTT’s BEST FRIEND! … and I thank the LORD for giving me the opportunity to feel so . Phil Barr
